My Coaching Business Journey

I pivoted into the personal development and life coaching space, after a decade of professional upheaval living overseas, following my spouse’s global career.

Although I had served as a Peace Corps Volunteer and US Diplomat, there were several years where I didn’t know if I was going to be able to secure a job as an expat, so I turned to entrepreneurship in coaching and speaking.  

In the first few years of business, I was lucky to be living in South Korea among many Americans. It was easier to get more clients because I was able to build real relationships with potential clients in-person.

Although I had luck coaching a variety of clients,  including diplomats, corporate executives, stay-at-home parents, and aspiring authors and entrepreneurs, my sales were not consistent yet. I felt spread thin and my message was too general. 

I had a very basic understanding of marketing and I implemented a creation-intensive content strategy, including a podcast and YouTube videos, but it didn't lead to any new clients, just more work.  

Once 2020 happened and we moved out of South Korea to Australia, I felt like I had to start all over again.

When we moved to Australia, I began my usual relationship building and networking strategy, but the local market was different and I was also adjusting to a new culture. My sales plateaued and I got discouraged.

On top of all that, I felt lonely and isolated in my business being so far away from home. 

But, when the world started to open up again, I recommitted to my business and started showing up online again, but this time with a focus on helping aspiring coaches, speakers, and authors start their entrepreneurial journey.

During this transition period in my business, something “clicked” and I began getting more business again. I began to feel more aligned and confident in myself, my message, and my mission. As a result, my marketing shifted and the money followed.

I stopped thinking like an hourly employee and started acting like the CEO of my business and the sales started coming in.
